The Keystone Preserve
The Keystone Preserve was purchased in March of 2023. A 24 acre property was owned by the Greer sisters; Margaret, Elisabeth and Meghan. The sisters didn't want to see the property developed and entered into a discussion with the Land Trust in 2020 to preserve their property. The Land Trust began a land preservation campaign in 2020 and applied for an Open Space and Watershed Acquisition (OSWA) Grant from the State of Connecticut. In 2022, the Land Trust was awarded $78,000 from the State of Connecticut and closing occurred 9 months after. Fundraising for this project was no small task and we appreciate the generosity of our members and donors. We couldn't have preserved this property without you.
The neat thing about this property is that it sits directly in the middle of four other Land Trust properties including Winkel's Pond. The addition of the 24 acres created a 75 acre conglomerate of open space in which there are trails and a beautiful pond with waterfowl and other wildlife. A parking area was created on Route 80 just east of the traffic circle and can hold 3-4 vehicles. The property is open for hiking with a nice loop trail. It also connects all the way up to KES on Wolf Hollow.
